It is hereby notified that under Article 233 of the Constitution of India read with the provisions of the Karnataka Judicial Service (Recruitment) Rules, 2004 and Amendment Rules 2011, 2015 and 2016, High Court of Karnataka invites online applications from eligible candidates for filling up of 21 vacant posts of District Judges (18 backlog and 3 new vacancies) by direct recruitment.

3. Qualification:
i) Must be holder of a degree in Law granted by a University established by Law in India;
ii) Must be practicing as an Advocate in the High Court or in a Subordinate Court on the last date fixed for receipt of applications and must have so practiced for a period not less than SEVEN years as on such date.
4. Public Prosecutor/Assistant Public Prosecutor/Government Counsel in full time employment of the State having not less than seven years of continuous practice immediately preceding the last date fixed for receipt of online applications are also eligible for appointment.
5. Scale Of Pay: Rs.51550-1230-58930-1380-63070.
6. Probation: A candidate selected will be initially on probation for TWO years or for extended period, if necessary and he/she must undergo such training as may be specified by the High Court.

Must not have attained the age of Forty-Eight years in the case of candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes and Forty-Five years in the case of others, as on the last date fixed for receipt of online applications.

Documents Required:
The candidates shall possess the following certificates/documents as on the last date fixed for receipt of online applications:
(i) Certificate of Enrolment as Advocate/Pleader, issued by the Bar Council.
(ii) List of cases conducted independently during the last three years with particulars of such cases.
(iii) Certificate issued by the Presiding Officer of the Court in which the candidate is actually practicing or Certificate issued by the Registrar (Judicial)/Additional Registrar General, if he/she is practicing in the High Court, indicating that he/she is a practicing Advocate. The certificate shall also indicate that he/she has been practicing as an Advocate for a period not less than seven years as on the last date fixed for receipt of online applications.
(iv) Two character certificates of good character (one from the Principal of the Institution/College in which the candidate has last studied with study details and another from a respectable person not being a relative who is well acquainted with the candidate).
(v) Income Tax return, if any, to show the annual income from the profession during the preceding three years
Selection Procedure :
1. Competitive Examination: The Competitive Examination for recruitment of District Judges shall consist of 3 stages namely (a) Preliminary Examination (b) Main Examination and (c) Viva-voce
2. Preliminary Examination:
The Preliminary Examination shall be conducted by way of Objective Type Question Paper with multiple choices of 1½ hours (Ninety minutes) duration consisting of 100 marks. The syllabi for the said examination shall be the following, namely:-
Part-A - Civil Law.
Part-B - Criminal Law.
Part-C - General Knowledge (Test of reasoning and Mental aptitude)
3. Main Examination: The Competitive Written Examination for recruitment of District Judges shall consist of:
(i) Written examination of two papers each of three hours duration with 150 maximum marks for each paper - one in Civil Law and another in Criminal Law.
(ii) It is compulsory for all candidates to answer at least one of the paper in English language and in so far as the other paper is concerned, it shall be optional for the candidates to answer the same either in English or in Kannada in which event the said paper shall be answered entirely in the language in which option is exercised.
4. Viva-voce:
(i) The viva-voce shall carry maximum 50 marks.
(ii) The candidate’s General knowledge, grasp on principles of law and suitability for appointment as District Judge shall be tested.
5. Minimum marks for pass in the Preliminary Examination shall be 50 for candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes and 60 for others.
6. The minimum marks for pass in each paper of the written examination carrying 150 marks, shall be 50 marks in each paper for candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe and 60 marks for others. However, total marks to be secured for pass in the written examination shall be 120 marks out of 300 for Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe and 150 marks out of 300 for others.
7. Selection of candidates shall be made in the order of merit on the basis of aggregate of the marks obtained in the Written Examination and Viva-voce test, subject to the Government Orders relating to reservation of posts for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and other backward classes.
